Under fire from its detractors over the Nandigram incidents, the CPI(M) asked its West Bengal unit to examine what went wrong as it admitted that "some mistakes" have been committed while handling the affair.
The three-day meeting of the party's Central Committee, the first after the police firing, deliberated the issue and concluded that it was unfortunate that ordinary people have died in the violence which should not be repeated again.
"The Central Committee has noted that some mistakes have been committed in the handling of the affair as stated by the Chief Minister (of West Bengal)," said party General Secretary Prakash Karat.
Asked what were the mistakes and who was responsible for it, he did not to give a direct answer and just said "there are various mistakes and some of which are committed by the government."
Although Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has already taken responsibility for the incidents in Nandigram, this is the first time that the CPI(M) central leadership is admitting that mistakes have been committed.
Karat said the Central Committee has asked the state unit to examine the circumstances and the handling of the matters that led to the police action on March 14, which claimed the lives of 14 villagers.
